Leaving today for San Diego to attend the Americans for the Arts 2011 Public Art Conference.

Lawrence, Kansas

Road tripped to Lawrence, Kansas this past weekend to attend a dear friend and fellow WashU MFA Grad alumni's exhibition. Nicolette Ross has been the Printmaking artist in residence at the Lawrence Art Center for the past year. This past Friday was her culminating exhibition entitled If You Say So, marking the end of her year long residency.

Also was very excited to finally see one of Patrick Dougherty's stick work installations in person. Comprised of maple and dogwood saplings, The Bedazzler stands 24 feet high and is located on the Kansas University campus.

SLAG Soft Sculpture Classes

Final week to register for Summer 2011 Art Classes at the St. Louis Artists Guild!! There are really great classes available in a wide range of mediums and I will be teaching a Soft Sculpture course this summer if my classes fill. Crossing my fingers. Hers the info:

 

 

Soft Sculptures

Instructor: Carlie Trosclair

Classes meet every Thursday 6:00pm-8:30pm
beginning June 16- August 4

"This class will investigate the ever-expanding vocabulary of soft sculpture. We will use less conventional techniques and methods to explore the tactile qualities associated with soft materials. The class is aimed to inspire material inventiveness and expand the possibilities of the handmade."

Most times I find when working that my biggest obstacle is gravity

Nests, Shells, Corners: Install 5/31

       Was hoping to introduce new patterns and color into this piece but I think the golds and ambers I picked out are too heavy and weigh the piece down. Bold colors and patterns are distracting from the frames and over power the intricacy in the folds and form. I'll experiment some more tomorrow but will probably stick to transparent flesh and nude tones so that the piece stays light and delicate. I think this will work best to contrast the hard lines of the frames

Nests, Shells, and Corners

 Currently in the process of  installing for the Nests, Shells, and Corners exhibition that opens this Friday. The title is taken from three chapters in Bachelard's Poetics of Space
